What Is This?

What is Borderline Personality Disorder?

Borderline Personality Disorder is categorized in the diagnostic and statistical manual as a mental health condition defined by irregular moods, an intense fear of abandonment and impulsivity. Since these symptoms overlap with several other mental health conditions, it can often be difficult for mental health professionals to diagnose borderline personality disorder.

Without professional diagnosis, many people struggle with BPD without realizing that there is a solution and diagnosis to their unhealthy behavioral patterns.

How To Take It

Navigating The Borderline Personality Disorder Test

Borderline personality disorder is classified as a cluster B personality disorder which severely affects all aspects of a persons life. Depending on the severity of the condition, individuals can become unable to cope with the emotions, have anger outbursts and hold distorted ideas of self-image. If you suspect you are suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder symptoms you can take a brief borderline personality disorder test to determine your options for help.

Results from this screening are not an official diagnosis for borderline personality disorder. If you are feeling intense emotional dysfunction or erratic, angry, outbursts, it is important to seek professional help and a medical diagnosis from a licensed mental health professional or physician.

The treatment team at HEAL Behavioral Health specializes in treating borderline personality disorder and other mental disorders, along with substance use and alcoholism. Taking a more in-depth borderline personality disorder test will be one of the first steps to treatment.

Diagnosing BPD

How To Diagnose Borderline Personality Disorder

A Borderline Personality Disorder test can be extremely valuable in screening for a high level evaluation of common signs and symptoms of this mental disorder. This does not provide a medical diagnosis or medication prescription for treatment. A mental health professional or medical professional can provide an accurate diagnosis.

Many mental health professionals will use the McLean screening instrument as a diagnostic tool to record a baseline of your bpd symptoms. Some psychotherapists or psychiatrists can also use other diagnostic tools to evaluate for other mental health disorders like existing eating disorders, bipolar disorder or anxiety disorders. This will allow for a more accurate diagnosis of all co-occurring mental illness the patient may be struggling with.

Guests at HEAL Behavioral Health complete a thorough diagnostic and assessment phase that includes the McLean screening instrument (the borderline personality disorder test used above), the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) for personality disorders and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), along with an in-depth biopsychosocial assessment to construct a highly personalized treatment plan with a licensed mental health professional.

Causes of Borderline Personality Disorder

According to the Cleveland Clinic, over 70% of individuals diagnosed with BPD have reported severe childhood abuse or trauma. Nearly 80% of these individuals abuse drugs and alcohol to cope with their symptoms.

Researchers also believe that genetics play a role in BPD diagnosis. A family history of BPD could result in a higher chance of being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. The borderline personality disorder test is usually taken by individuals who have a pre-existing diagnosis for mental health, PTSD, substance use or childhood abuse.

BPD and Substance Use Disorder

Many of the trauma patients that come to HEAL Behavioral Health for treatment of their substance use disorder or alcoholism, find that they actually struggle with underlying Borderline Personality Disorder or other mental health disorders by working closely with our psychiatric and clinical teams.

BPD symptoms can often develop serious substance use disorders, masking the underlying causes from treatment professionals. HEAL Behavioral Health is able to diagnose using a borderline personality disorder test and enable our guests to develop healthy coping skills, process through childhood trauma, redirect away from self damaging acts, and manage their bpd symptoms with a medication protocol.

Treating Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

Specific symptoms of BPD can be intrusive in a person’s day to day life, making it difficult to maintain employment, have healthy relationships and emotionally self-regulate. Many times, BPD can cause a person to turn to substance abuse and other harmful process addictions.

Mitigating urgent needs first like safely detoxing a patient from substances and alcohol and regulating other mental health conditions with medications take immediate priority when treating borderline personality disorder. Following the initial borderline personality disorder test, substance use disorder evaluations and care, comes the treatment. Treatment can include a number of modalities including talk therapy, DBT, CBT, rational emotive therapy, and more.

We find that many individuals who have borderline personality disorder are averse to getting treatment help of any kind. Working with an individual to allow them to see that they need to get professional help is part of the professional treatment services offered at HEAL Behavioral Health.

Getting Help From a Licensed Mental Health Professional

A properly trained licensed therapist can help identify symptoms, learn coping skills and process through the underlying trauma. Taking the borderline personality disorder test as a self assessment is only the beginning of the journey. A mental health professional can help treat your problems.
